American Government

American Government
It is amazing how many times you here something about spreading democracy and promoting democracy around the world. Just a few days ago, Senator John McCain was promoting democracy. You might be surprised to hear this, but America is not and never has been a democracy. The United States of America is in fact a republic. To be more specific, the US is a Constitutional federal republic. It is important to know this because there is a key difference between a democracy and a republic. This difference is something the new world prides itself on... Human rights. In a democracy, you have no rights. It is simply tyranny of the majority. In a democracy 51% of the people can take away the rights of 49% of the people. In a republic, you can have all the people you want voting to take away the rights of one person and it won't do a thing. Under a constitutional republic each and every person is guaranteed basic human rights and no one can take them away.

Current US Government
The current US government is really neither here nor there. Although the government is set up to have only constitutional laws(laws that do not violate human rights) there are quite a few laws that do violate human rights. The underlying laws of the country, however, do permit the federal courts to strike down these laws. If they do not strike down these laws that violate the constitution then we have a system that is somewhat undefined. The government would be part republic in that we elect certain people who are meant to represent us. We would be only be part democratic because we can vote on local laws, but in essence we would be close to a dictatorship. The only difference would be that we get to elect the ruler. We would not be close to a democracy because we don't vote on our laws. We would not be a republic because the current ruler can make whatever laws he sees fit. This is what happened in Nazi Germany. Hitler basically declared war on Communists and the Jewish people. He made laws that violated the German peoples rights all in the name of domestic defense. So according to history, we are currently on a path to some sort of dictator ship as the laws are currently violating more rights and giving the commander in chief ever increasing power. This seems a rather harsh assessment, but when you read the bill of rights and look at the bills that are now being passed into law, you can see that the bill of rights has only one thing left, and that is that no US citizen is required to house military personnel.
