Art Materials
Art Materials Art materials are the basic supplies for making art. There are several different mediums. In this article i will talk about the three most basic mediums; 2d, 3d and photography. Each medium of art requires different supplies. No particular style has the cheapest material. 2D Materials Painting I'm going to talk about the most common 2d styles...painting and drawing. One of the most important things that apply to both painting and drawing is the paper weight. What you will want is a paper with a heavier weight. This is important because when you paint the water in the paint, and this applies to more than just water color, will sink into the paper. If the paper is lighter several things can happen. The most common thing is that the paper will begin to ripple, it can also tear or get stuck to the table. For the paint, you can choose acrylic, that is a nice thicker paint with richer colors, water color is nice for light paintings or beginners. Those are the two most common paints. To go along with this paint you will need a paint brush. The better ones are made out of camel hair. Those are very nice, be sure to wash them and they will give you smooth even brush strokes. Another useful tool when painting is the pallet. This will allow you to made the perfect color. Those are the basics of painting materials. If you have a creative mind, those things will take you far. A bit of advice, you should keep a cup of water and a towel or paper towel near by so you can change from color to color with little mixing. Drawing For drawing you will not have one "paint brush" and many paints, you will have different colored pencils. This is kind of nice because you wont need to keep changing water and you can erase. Ok, colored pencils... Don't go cheap. The cheap ones can break, not sharpen right or wont give good colors. Now although you may not think this is important, you should have pencils with different hardnesses. 2H will give you a good lighter shade because it is a hard pencil. The scale goes up to 9H. When you want a darker shade you should use a pencil labeled with an f or HB. Then for the really dark you will need a higher B such as 9B. These normally come in a case or box. They are fairly inexpensive. Another material you can use is charcoal. Charcoal is good because it give you a good range and it's fairly easy to you and you don't need such an array of things. If you use charcoal use paper towels or a rolled up piece of paper to smear the charcoal. When you roll it you should have a shape like a crayon. They actually sell pre-rolled ones made of a lighter paper. They are called stubs. If you are doing a bit of a collage and need to trace an image get some tracing paper, it's not a waste. To trace it back onto another paper you can scribble on the back and trace leaving something like a carbon copy or press hard enough to leave an indent on the other piece of paper. Now the most important thing...an eraser. Believe it or not, you can use bread, but i would not recommend it. Rubber is cheaper and you won't be wasting anything edible. You should use a soft or vinyl eraser. They are normally bright white. They are very good erasers and can erase some of the darkest lines and can work with charcoal. 3D Materials There are two general themes to 3d art. There are general crafts which can use anything from cardboard to metal and then there is ceramics. Since ceramics is one of the most common and widely recognized I will tell you what you need for that. First off you will need clay. The most common clays are white, red and brown. The colors i just listed have different properties. For example, I listed them in the firing temperature going from lowest to highest. If you fire any of those clays too high they will melt. Speaking of firing you will also need a kiln. What they call "green drying" will not leave you with a sold water proof piece of ceramic. This will only dry it out, which you'll need to do before firing. Ceramics has many tools, for pots you have a wheel and your basic wooden carving tools. Once a piece is crafted you will need to glaze it. You can use a color glaze and/or a glossy glaze. For this you will also need a paint brush, again I recommend a camel hair brush. A wire cutter will come in handy when cutting clay that you will then basically kneed and then mold into something. If you want to make something with flat edges you should have a rolling pin. This is really all you need. The rest is up to you. Photography If you are new to photography a compact digital camera and a basic computer will do fine. For the more advance you will probably want a full size digital camera with somewhere over 8 or 9 mega pixels. You will probably want an adjustable or fast shutter speed. For those who are a little more artistic or want to take some time on it you will probably want a camera with film, this will end up costing more. Over all photography is pretty simple. The only thing you have to worry about is shaking. This you can fix with a tripod or some sort of digital corrector. A faster shutter speed will also help with shaking and moving. Four zoom should do fine for the average person. Most camera with four zoom can zoom to about 16x. If you go digital get a back up memory card and if you don't feel safe you can get one with safety feature to help protect you from corrupting data. Corrupt data does happen fairly often, but not often enough that you have to get one with a safety feature. Also, if you shoot outside in the sun, black cameras get hot. |
