Glazes

Glazes
Glazes are what are used to paint pots and other ceramic items. Glazes are a combination of color and clay. It is important to note that the color a glaze is when you put it on a pot may not be the same color the glaze is when it gets fired. In order to fix this problem you should create samples by using small pieces of clay and then label them and fire. This will act as a color for the key. Make sure to do this for every glaze because some glazes don't look a thing like they do before they are fired, but this is mainly the case in special glazes like multicolor ones. Make sure to glaze at the proper temperature too.

Glazing
Before glazing, make sure you have your key for the colors and make sure to shake the containers before using them because they can separate and be too watery at the top and too thick at the bottom. when glazing make sure to evenly coat. If you really want the color to show you should use white clay for the ceramic piece.

Glossy Glaze
When making a piece there is a certain way to glaze. What you should do is use an underglaze which is dull and used only for coloring. Make sure to fire the piece after putting the under glaze. The after it is fired you will put a glossy glaze on the piece. Now there are some glzes that will do both, but that is not often the case. In addition to that you will want to have two different things for glazing and making it glossy because there are more unglossy colors and if you ever just want to put a clear glaze on a piece you will need a clear gloss.

When putting on a clear gloss it will look light blue, don't worry it is supposed to look like that. Make sure to put it on one layer at a time and put it on in somewhat thin coats. Three coats should be enough. If you put too many on the gloss will have a lot of tiny bubbles in it casing it to have white and/or lumpy spots. Make sure to also glaze the inside if you want it to hold water. This will help prevent leaks and keep color if you put an underglaze on the inside.
