Space
Space Space means different things to different people or groups. Most people think of space as either room to fill or outer space. I am going to talk about space in an art sense. Space in art is essentially the same as space in the normal sense, but it is thought of and used more as a tool. In art, space is like an object that has just as much value as something that takes up space. In art, space is either positive or negative. Negative space is the space surrounding an object or the space between several objects. In art, both 3d and 2d you want to have a balance of space. You do not want one side to be "heavier" than the other. Playing With Space When playing with space it is important to take a step back every once in a while and make sire that all sides of the piece of art generally have the same spacing or at least have it so that the piece is not too unbalanced. A pine cone is a good example of playing with space. Both a realistic and an abstract of simplified version of a pine cone have a great balance of positive and negative space. A One more thing to note when playing with space is to make sure it's pretty evenly divided. This is slightly different than making sure your work is balance, because the balance refers to the piece overall and the spacing just looks at how far apart the objects are in proportion to one another. Positive and negative Positive and negative space is always important. If you are working on a 3d piece, make sure that that both your 2d spacing on the piece and the 3d object are both balanced spatially. If you want a piece to be more abstract you will generally have more negative space. This simplifies your piece and allows a nice easy flow around the objects. There will also be less negative spaces. Abstract means simplification, so when you make an abstract anything it is going to be simpler, easier to draw and will be less complicated. This will leave you with less negative spaces and less positive spaces. The one thing you always want to keep in mind is that you should not, if you are trying to make a good balanced piece of art, have too much of an imbalance between positive and negative space. True you can play with it, but unless there is a point to having an imbalance, don't do it unless you feel like learning the hard way. |
