The Professor
The Professor
Dictated by logic, the professor was a valuable asset to Gilligan and the rest of the cast aways. The professor, originally supposed to be a high school teacher was a college professor with degrees in, psychology, chemistry and a slew of other things. The professor was the inventor on the island making such things as a pump system to get water from water wells and washing machines to do the laundry. Occasionally he would come up with a plan for a rescue, like phosphorescent floats and a hot air balloon at one point.
The professor wasn't the main character for many episodes, one of the episodes that he was a main part in was one where he fell in love with a visitor name Erica Tiphany Smith. Erica was a wealthy woman who landed on the island while taking a short trip on her yacht. The relationship did not work out, the professor was too much of an academic and Erica preferred a man who was more of a poet. The rescue, obviously didn't work out, her directions didn't make any sense so the professor continued his life of solitude on the island with the rest of the cast aways. The reason the professor wanted to go on the tour was to write a book. On the second episode he decides to chronicle their adventure. Though he never finishes the book he does write about some odd plant life on the island. Post Island Career
The professor can be credited with their escape from the island. When the professor predicts a big storm will come their way and wash over the island he decides it would be best to tie all their huts together. The hut is then washed into the ocean and then found by a coast guard helicopter when Gilligan sets one end of the hut on fire. After the rescue the professor returned to college teaching and inventing, though in inventing he didn't do so well, all the things he made had already been invented and the dean of the college only wanted him because he was some what a celebrity. In the end the castaways return to the island because Gilligan breaks the compass and all things return to normal. |
